I would like to recommend Dr. Timothy Vanderkwaak, of Asheville NC. He is a gynecological oncologist and very familiar with carcinosarcoma. He has provided excellent, thoughtful treatment to my wife, who was diagnosed in 2011 with Stage 4 uterine carcinosarcoma. He works well with other doctors, and has consulted with Michael Birrer in Alabama for us. You can reach him at Mission Hospital’s Hope Cancer Center, 828-670-8403. And yes, my wife is still fighting! ?

My mother in law was just diagnosed carcinosarcoma stage 4. We live in Arkansas and are loooking for a second opinion. Anyone have experience with Dr. Birrer or Dr. Santin or any physicians at MD Anderson ( I heard they have some physicians specializing in this cancer). What is best way to reach Dr.Birrer’s office?

Hi Milana,

I'm sorry to hear about your mother-in-law and hope that she is able to get a second opinion soon. It's a difficult time, but we hope that you can find the information you will need, help, and support from our community and the website.

The contact information for our experts (Dr. Birrer, Dr. Santin and others) is on the website under the Resources tab - "GCS Specialists by Location."

To schedule an appointment with Dr. Birrer, please call 205-996-2524 to reach his Executive Assistant, Karen Beeching. Karen will assist you in obtaining a consultation with Dr. Birrer. Please be sure to mention that your mother-in-law has been diagnosed with carcinosarcoma.

Regarding MD Anderson - Although there might be physicians at MD Anderson who have much expertise in GCS, at this time we don't have the name of a specialist there. Diane went to MD Anderson early on hoping to have surgery and was under the care of a surgical oncologist, but she was not a candidate for surgery. The surgical oncologist is no longer there.

Let us know if you have any trouble reaching Karen and making an appointment with Dr. Birrer.

Keep in touch.

Kathy

I have seen Dr. Birrer. He was very kind and willing to answer all questions. Although I was living from treatment to treatment (in my thoughts), he encouraged me to enjoy my days instead of worrying about "what ifs." I needed that! He was a very encouraging person!

I am currently under the care of my local doctor here - Dr. Paul Seago. He is working in conjunction with Dr. Birrer so that I can take treatments here in Jackson, Mississippi, my home.

Ann
